Frequently Asked Questions

Do the tours include airfare?

Travelers arrive from all over the world to begin our tours and it is not possible to include international airfare in our prices. We would be happy to help you arrange flights. Just ask for an air quote when making your booking.

Are airport transfers included?

Yes. Airport transfers to and from the start and end locations, respectively, are included. If due to any reason, our designated vehicle is unable to pick and drop you, we will arrange and pay for a cab to do so.

Can I join a tour late or leave it early?

It’s extremely difficult if not impossible to join a tour after it has begun. It is possible to leave a tour early however you will be responsible for your own arrangements from the moment you decide to leave the tour. You would also be responsible for all costs associated with joining a tour late or leaving one early.

How many riders can join a tour?

We start a tour with a minimum of 4 riders on board. Currently, looking at the equipment and logistical support we can provide, we have a cap at a maximum of 24 riders.

Is there any age restrictions for the riders?

The minimum age requirement is 18 years. There is no cap on the maximum age. On our South India tour in Feb 2018, we had a 74-year-old rider.

I am travelling alone, will I be charged a single supplement?

All our hotel bookings are on a twin sharing basis. However, you have the option of paying for the single supplement at the time of booking your tour so that we can make arrangements for single accommodation for you accordingly.

Can I book extra nights of hotel accommodation before or after my tour?

Yes, in most cases we can arrange additional accommodation at our starting or ending hotels. If we are unable to provide you with the extra nights we will give you the name of a hotel you can contact directly.

Do I have to share a room on the tour?

The rooms are allocated on a twin sharing basis and if you are travelling with a friend or partner we will do our best to accommodate you accordingly provided we are aware of the situation well in advance of the trip. If you are travelling on your own you will be expected to share with another solo participant. If you require a single room to yourself, you will have to pay for the single supplement at the time of booking your tour.

What is the most appropriate type of luggage to bring?

We strongly recommend bringing a backpack or duffel bag, as suitcases can be cumbersome and difficult to store on the roof racks of the support vehicle. Keep in mind that you will normally have to carry your own luggage on and off the support vehicle and up and down hotel staircases.

Can I pay in full at the time of booking the tour?

You sure can. You also have the option of making the initial deposit at the time of booking a tour and then pay the balance amount at least 90 days prior to the start of the tour.

Can I use my motorcycle in the evenings?

No, we cannot allow you to ride independently of the group for both safety and insurance reasons.

Do I need travel Insurance? What does my policy need to cover?

Yes. You must be covered by suitable medical travel insurance which must include adequate provision for riding a motorcycle up to 500cc in a foreign country with emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage. On Day 1 your tour captain or Phaedrus India representative shall ask you for proof of coverage. The insurance should provide cover against cancellation charges, unexpected curtailment of the trip, medical expenses arising overseas, loss or damage to luggage, and personal liability claims, with a minimum coverage of £200,000. You are not required to cover the motorcycle itself as a third-party cover is provided by us but if damage to the motorcycle occurs due to rider error you are liable for the cost of repair. You must carry the original of this insurance document with you at all times during the course of the tour.

What are the medical and vaccination requirements?

Medical and vaccination requirements differ between nations. Please see your local GP or travel doctor for details and advice about current vaccination requirements. It’s important that you receive the most accurate and up-to-date travel health information for the region you will be visiting.

What if I get ill or injured on the trip and unable to continue?

Our tour guides are trained to deal with these situations and we also carry all the necessary medical and emergency supplies on our tours. If you must leave the trip early due to illness, our local office will help you find appropriate medical care and ensure someone at home is aware of the situation. We will do whatever we can to get you home or on your onward journey. Your travel insurance, which is compulsory on all our tours, should cover any costs incurred if illness occurs.

Can I cancel my booking if I decide I cannot make it?

When your deposit is made, and we confirm your booking, it is non-refundable. Please read our Cancellation Policy for more details.

What traveller information do you collect?

The information we need from you is Emergency Contact Details / Medical Information / Travel Insurance Details / Passport and Visa Details / Arrival and Departure Details.

How is Phaedrus India going to handle the information provided?

How much spending money will I need?

You will not need a great deal. Almost everything apart from your evening beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) is included in the tour cost. 20 to 40 pounds per day should be enough, depending upon your spending pattern. Or your capacity for the lager :))

What is not provided on the tours?

Almost everything apart from your evening beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) is included in the tour cost. For more information, check the Inclusions/Exclusions lists under Tour Information on any of the tour pages.

Do I need to be an experienced rider?

Yes. We ride on the left side of the road and it’s important that you feel comfortable riding a motorcycle in India. Indian roads and chaotic traffic conditions, especially riding through densely populated towns en route, pose a challenge of their own.  We would suggest that you have ridden regularly prior to the trip.

Can I bring a pillion with me?

Yes, you can. You can also choose to ride as a pillion and we would try to pair you up with a willing experienced rider or one of our tour guides.

Can I do a tour without being on the motorcycle?

Yes, if you feel hesitant about being on a motorcycle, we can arrange for a 4-wheeler for you to travel in, with the bike group.

Do I need a Full Motor Vehicle or Motorcycle License?

Yes. You must hold a current and full motor vehicle license at the time of the event. Riders will not be able to participate without proof of a valid license. You must carry the original driving license with you at all times during the course of the tour.

Do I need an International Driving permit (IDP)?

Yes. You must carry the original document with you at all times during the course of the entire tour.

Will refrigeration be available for medicines? eg. Insulin

Availability of refrigeration cannot be guaranteed. As a general rule, many of our hotels provide access to small fridges; however, outside of this, especially when on the road, you cannot rely on access to refrigeration. Please be sure to advise us if you are travelling with medication that requires refrigeration.

What will the weather be like?

North India would have highs ranging from 20 to 30 degrees while the night temperatures could plummet to low single digits, especially in the lower Himalayan region. On our Goa, Kerala and Mumbai tours you could encounter day temperatures in low to mid – 30s with higher humidity levels but pleasant nights, with temperatures going down to high single digits at some hill stations in the high Western Ghats. There is almost no or very little chance of rain as most of our tours are scheduled to skirt the monsoon season which usually lasts from mid-June to mid-September all over India.

What will the food be like on my trip?

Food is one of the most exciting parts of travel. There may be some familiar fare especially at the breakfast table but often you’ll be able to enjoy some of the most varied, amazing, and palate pleasing cuisine. Not all Indian food is spicy and if you are generally careful in your partake of street food and water, you are in for a journey full of culinary delights.

Is tipping included and if not, how much should I budget?

Tipping is discretionary, it is usual to tip porters at a hotel but they should not expect it. Please ask if you are unsure how much to tip. At the end of the tour, we will hold a collection for the drivers and mechanics that help us throughout the trip. You will find them invaluable and incredibly helpful.
